Let it Snow...Let it Snow...Headband and Shawl to Keep You Warm!

OK all you Northern and Eastern babes....so sorry winter is so long, so snowy, so cold and so icy...what a perfect excuse to stay in and knit! Knit this headband and shawl to keep you snug as a bug in a rug!

HEADBAND:
Sizes: One size

Materials: DROPS ALASKA, 50 gr nr 50, brown

Needles 4.5 mm [US 7] needles, or size needed to obtain correct gauge.

Gauge:
18 sts x 23 rows in stockinette st = 10 x 10 cm

Headband: Start at center back. Cast on 19 sts. Knit rib as follows:
Row 1 (right side): K 1 (edge st knit in garter st), * K 2, P 1 * repeat a total of 5 times – finish row with K 2 and K 1 (edge st knit in garter st).
Row 2 (wrong side): K 1 (edge st knit in garter st), * P 2, K 1 * repeat a total of 5 times – finish row with P 2 and K 1 (edge st knit in garter st).
Make all incs on right side rows.

When the piece measures 8 cm inc all P 1 to P 2 = 24 sts.

When the piece measures 14 cm inc all P 2 to P 3 = 29 sts.

When the piece measures 18 cm inc all P 3 to P 4 = 34 sts.

When the piece measures 21 cm inc all P 4 to P 5 = 39 sts.
When the piece measures 24 cm place a marker = this is the center of headband.
Now reverse shaping – measure from marker.
Make all decs on right side rows.

When the piece measures 3 cm dec all P 5 to P 4 = 34 sts.

When the piece measures 6 cm dec all P 4 to P 3 = 29 sts.

When the piece measures 10 cm dec all P 3 to P 2 = 24 sts.

When the piece measures 16 cm dec all P 2 to P 1 = 19 sts.

When the piece measures 48 cm join to cast-on edge (do not bind off first).

SHAWL :
Measurements:
Length: 100 cm [39?3/8"]
Width: 205 cm [80.75"]

Materials: VIENNA
200 gr nr 43, light brown
Needles 15 mm [US 19] needles, or size needed to obtain correct gauge.

Gauge: 5 sts x 9 rows in garter st = 10 x 10 cm (this is loosely knit)

Shawl: Cast on 4 sts and knit garter st, increasing 1 st at one side every other row. Inc by knitting 2 sts in 1 st. Continue incs until there are 50 sts, the piece measures approx. 102 cm. Now dec on the same side as incs – dec every other row by K 2 tog the 2 outermost sts. Continue dec until 4 sts remain, the piece measures approx. 205 cm, bind off.

Fringe: Fasten fringe tufts along both sides approx. 4-5 cm apart – start at point at lower edge. Cut 6 strands 35 cm long, fold in half, pull folded end through outermost st and pull ends through loop.

Bust: 120-132-144-156 cm [47¼’’-52’’-56½’’-61¼’’]
Full length: 72-76-82-88 cm [28 3/8’’-30’’-32¼’’-34 5/8’’]

Materials:
DROPS Vienna from Garnstudio
350-400-450-500 g color no 43, light brown

DROPS Silke Alpaca from Garnstudio
100 g for all sizes color no 1340, light beige

Circular needle size 9 mm [US 13] (40 and 80 cm [16” and 32”]) – or size needed to get 10 sts x 12 rows in stockinette st with Vienna = 10 x 10 cm [4’’ x 4’’].

Crochet hook size 5 mm [H/8] – for crochet border.


Measuring tip: Because of the weight of the yarn, all measurements should be made whilst the garment is hanging, otherwise it will be too long when worn.

Garter st in the round: K 1 round, P 1 round.

Decreasing tip: Dec on both sides of all Marking Threads (MT). Beg 3 sts before MT. Dec as follows before MT: K2 tog, K1.
Dec as follows after MT: slip 1 st as if to K, K1, psso.

PONCHO
Worked in the round on circular needle.
Cast on 180-192-204-216 sts on circular needle size 9 mm [US 13] with Vienna.
Work 6 rounds garter st – see above. Insert 1 Marking Thread (MT) after 15-16-17-18 sts, and a further 5 MT with 30-32-34-36 sts between each (= 6 MT). Continue in stockinette st.
Remember the knitting gauge! When piece measures 10-12-13-14 cm [4”-4¾”-5 1/8”-5½”] dec 1 st on both sides of each MT (= 12 dec) – see Decreasing tip – on every 9-9-10-11 cm [3½”-3½”-4”-4 3/8”] a total of 5 times = 120-132-144-156 sts. At the same time when piece measures 19-21-25-29 cm [7½”-8¼”-9¾”-11 3/8”] divide the piece to make openings for armholes as follows:
Slip sts from beg of round to MT-1 on a stitch holder, leave sts between MT-1 and MT-3 on needle and slip remaining sts on the stitch holder. Work remaining sts on needle back and forth in stockinette st with 1 garter st each side.
Remember to continue dec! When piece measures 18-19-20-21 cm [7”-7½”-8”-8 1/4”] from dividing the piece slip sts from needle on a new stitch holder. Slip sts from the first stitch holder back on needle and work stockinette st back and forth on needle with 1 garter st each side.
Remember to continue dec! When piece measures 18-19-20-21 cm [7”-7½”-8”-8 1/4”] from dividing the piece slip all sts back on the same needle. Continue in stockinette st in the round at the same time continue dec. When piece measures 48-50-55-60 cm [19”-19 ¾”-21 5/8”-23 5/8”] (all dec are now complete = 120-132-144-156 sts on round) dec 4 sts evenly = 116-128-140-152 sts.
Continue until piece measures 61-65-71-77 cm [24”-25½”-28”-30 3/8”] and dec 18-20-20-22 sts evenly on next round = 98-108-120-130 sts. K 1 round. On next round beg dec 12-14-16-18 sts evenly on round on every 3 cm [1 1/8”] a total of 4 times = 50-52-56-58 sts. Insert 1 MT and now measure piece from here.

Neck: Continue in stockinette st. When piece measures approx 10 cm [4’’] from MT inc 10-11-11-12 sts evenly and repeat the inc when piece measures 14 cm [5½’’] and 18 cm [7”] from MT = 80-85-89-94 sts. When neck measures 38-40-42-44 cm [15”-15 ¾”-16½”-17¼”] from MT work 6 rounds garter st, bind off loosely.

Crochet border: Crochet a border along bottom edge, round the neck and round both armholes with crochet hook size 5 mm [H/8] with Silke Alpaca as follows (beg at side for bottom edge): * 1 sc, 4 ch, 1 dc in the first of these ch, skip approx 1 cm [3/8’’] *, repeat from *-* and finish with 1 sl st in sc from beg of round.

Twisted ribbon with tassels:
Cut 2 threads Vienna and 2 threads Silke Alpaca measuring approx 300 cm [3.3 yds] each. Twist them until they resist, fold threads double and let them twist again. Tie a knot each end. Make 1 more ribbon. Tie the 2 ribbons tog at the ends and pull through neckline, placing the knot mid back and the 2 ends at the front.

Tassels: Cut 5 threads Vienna and 9 threads Silke Alpaca measuring approx 22 cm
[6 3/4’’] each. Fold threads double, pull loop through loop at the end of ribbon at front and pull threads through loop. Repeat at the end of the other ribbon.
