Classic Spring Sweater

A ribbed sweater for spring is always a classic. This Berroco Yarn pattern is the perfect one!

Directions are for women’s size X-Small.  Changes for sizes Small, Medium, Large, 1X and 2X are in parentheses

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Bust – 32(36-40-44-48-52)”
Length – 20(20½-21½-22-23-23½)”

MATERIALS
9(10-11-13-14-16) Hanks BERROCO CAPTIVA (50 grs), #5512 Aqua
Straight knitting needles, sizes 6 (4.00 mm) and 8 (5.00 mm) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE
16” Length circular knitting needle, size 6 (4.00 mm)
1 St marker


GAUGE
17 sts = 4”; 30 rows = 4” in Shaker Rib on larger needles
TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE
SHAKER RIB (Odd number of sts)
Set-Up Row (RS):  P1, * k1, p1, rep from * across.
Row 1 (WS):  K1, * bring yarn to RS of work under needle and sl the next st, k1, bringing yarn over needle (this forms a yo), k1, rep from * across.
Row 2 (RS):  P1, * k yo and slipped st tog as one, p1, rep from * across.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 for Shaker Rib.

BACK
With smaller straight needles, cast on 102(118-130-142-154-170) sts.
Row 1 (RS):  K2, * p2, k2, rep from * across.
Row 2:  P2, * k2, p2, rep from * across.  Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 2” from beg, end on WS, dec 33(41-45-47-51-59) sts across – 69(77-85-95-103-111) sts.  Change to larger needles and work even in Shaker Rib until piece measures 12(12-12½-12½-13-13)” from beg, end on WS.
Shape Armholes:  Bind off 3(4-4-5-5-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of the following 2 rows – 59(65-73-81-89-95) sts.  Dec 1 st each side every RS row 2(3-5-7-8-9) times – 55(59-63-67-73-77)sts.  Work even until armholes measure 7(7½-8-8½-9-9½)”, end on WS.
Shape Shoulders and Neck:  Next Row (RS):  Bind off 2(2-4-4-5-5), work until there are 8(10-10-12-1416)sts on RH  needle, join another hank of yarn and bind off center 35 sts, work to end.  Working both sides at once, bind off 2(2-4-4-5-5) sts at beg of the next row, then 2(3-3-4-5-6) sts at beg of the next 4 rows.
AT THE SAME TIME, bind off 2 sts at each neck edge twice.

FRONT
Work same as back until armholes measure 5(5½-6-6½-7-7½)”, end on WS – 55(59-63-67-73-77) sts.
Shape Neck:  Next Row (RS):  Work 16(18-20-22-25-27) sts, join another hank of yarn and bind off center 23 sts, work to end.  Working both sides at once, bind off 2 sts at each neck edge twice, then dec 1 st at each
neck edge every RS row 6 times.  When all decs have been completed, work even on 6(8-10-12-15-17) sts each side if necessary until armholes measure 7(7½-8-8½-9-9½)”, end on WS.   Bind off 2(2-4-4-5-5) sts at each armhole edge once, then 2(3-3-4-5-6) sts twice for shoulders.

SLEEVES
With smaller straight needles, cast on 58 sts.  Work in ribbing same as back for 2”, end on WS, dec 19 sts across – 39 sts.  Change to larger needles and work in Shaker Rib, inc 1 st each side every 2(1½-2¼-1- ¾ ¾)” 6(8-10-12-14-16)  times, working incs into pat as sts become available – 51(55-59-63-67-71) sts.  Work even until sleeve measures 15” from beg, end on WS. 
Shape Cap:  Bind off 3(4-4-5-5-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of the following 2 rows – 41(43-47-49-53-55) sts.  Dec 1 st each side every 4th row 0(0-0-1-1-2) times, then every RS row 13(1315-13-15-13) times, end on WS–15(17-17-21-21-25)sts.

Bind off remaining 9(13-13-17-17-21)sts.

FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams.
Neckband:  With RS facing, using circular needle, beg at left shoulder seam, pick up and k112 sts around entire neck edge.  Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Work even in k2, p2 ribbing for 1¼".  Bind off in ribbing.  Sew in sleeves.  Sew side and sleeve seams.
