Hi. Have you knitted this scarf? I am trying to but am struggling with the instructions. Do I slip stitches purlwise or knitwise? Also, does Row 5 create a bunch of extra stitches? If so, how many stitches should I have on needle after Row 5 is complete? If not, how do I keep from adding stitches when it says to insert needle from front under long bar created from Row 2? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

To Laura,
I was just getting ready to knit this up over the weekend. I loved the color combo, so I grabbed it from Lion Yarn. I'll need some time to look over the pattern and see the issues you're having. I hope to have an answer for you quickly.

Or...if anyone out there has made any corrections, please pass them along! Marla

To Laura,
My friend and fellow knitter, Heather Sutherland wrote thisd I think answered your questions:
It looks like you do it both ways, depending on what the pattern says.

Example: Row 1 (RS): With B, k1, *sl 1 wyib, sl 1 wyif, sl 1 wyib, k1, rep from * across.

The first slip stitch - wyib - the b stands for back, so you should keep your yarn in the back while you slip the stitch - basically slip it knitwise. The second slip stitch -wyif- the f stands for front, so you should keep your yarn in the front while you stitch - or slip stitch purlwise. Your pattern reads in english - With B colored yarn, knit one, *slip stitch 1 (with yarn in back - or knitwise), slip stitch 1 (with yarn in front - or purlwise), slip stitch 1 (with yarn in back - or knitwise), knit one - repeat from * to end.

As for row 5 I'm pretty sure you aren't going to increase your stitches.

Row 5: With B, k1, *sl 1 wyib, insert needle from front under long B strand of Row 2 and k next st, sl 1 wyib, k1, rep from * across.
Row 6: With B, K1, *sl 1 wyif, p1, sl 1 wyif, k1, rep from * across.

The weird stitch is just taking the place of the purl stitch in other rows (or knit stitch.) See, both rows 5 and 6 start w/ slip stitches, then in row 5 you have that weird knit stitch and meanwhile you have a purl stitch in 6. Then you slip stitch in both rows and end with a knit stitch in both rows. It's the same amount of stitches, just a slightly strange one in row 5. The stitch is a normal knit stitch, except that you are stitching it around a long stitch from a lower row. You aren't knitting that long strand, you're just knitting around it so you shouldn't increase your stitches.

As for how to actually make that stitch - I'm guessing you take your right needle - move it across the front of the long stitch to the left side of that stitch, loop your needle behind/underneath the stitch and bring the tip of your needle back to the right - and then knit the stitch like normal. Not knowing what the work looks like (and not being an expert knitter) that's my best guess.

Laura I sent an email to Lion Brand Yarns and here is the repsonse!

Hi, Marla --

Unless directed by the pattern or working a decrease, you should always slip as if to purl.

You are not making extra stitches on row 5; you are working that lifted stitch together with the next stitch in the row. I hope this helps -- please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
